Mark Wilson And Johnson Wagner 2012 A Few Names To Follow

HUMANA CHALLENGE, LA QUINTA, Calif. — Mark Wilson‘s last day at the Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation started before sunrise and ended after sunset. In between, he finished his third round, got his kids ready for daycare at his in-laws’ house, and then held off several hard-charging contenders amid the final round’s growing dark and desert chill.

Wilson made a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the Humana Challenge on Sunday, beating Robert Garrigus, John Mallinger and Johnson Wagner by two strokes in a dramatic dusk finish to the wind-delayed tournament.

Moments after Garrigus barely missed a 35-foot eagle putt that would have given him the lead, Wilson coolly made his birdie try in the disappearing light before celebrating his fifth career PGA TOUR victory with his wife, two sons and a surprisingly fragile trophy from the erstwhile Bob Hope Classic.

“Robert and I, going back and forth, we really enjoyed that,” Wilson said. “It just came down to 18, and I didn’t want to give him a chance to make that putt to tie me. … That’s what we play for. You want somebody to win it, not necessarily to lose it.”

Wilson ended up with a hard-fought, two-stroke victory over Garrigus, John Mallinger and Johnson Wagner — the fifth of his PGA TOUR career. Two came in the first five events of the 2011 season and now he has another in the just third of this year. There’s a reason for that, and Wilson, who didn’t build on his early season momentum last year, has scheduled several longer breaks this season to make sure he is fresh.

Wagner near victory came on the heels of his 3rd career win at the Sony Open last week. Wagner’s win in Honolulu marked the second consecutive year a Mayakoba Golf Classic champion has won in Hawaii to start the season.
Mark Wilson, the 2009 Mayakoba Golf Classic champion, won the same event in 2011.  Teed Off Tee Times will be following both players closely this year and also rooting for past champions Fred Funk, Brian Gay and Cameron Beckman in 2012.

Matt Every Putting With A Shovel

With all the talk of Matt Every putter, I watched a little more G.C. tonite and part of his reason for scoring low was good putting today….25 putts.  Then they showed him putting…wow, it looked like he was using one of those large wooden brooms, that you have in the garage for sweeping the big stuff.  They joked that “it looks like something he may have made himself out in the garage”, or “did he forget to take the headcover off?”.  It was monstrously huge.  It is thought to be a Black Hawk by Orion Golf?

Season For Golf With Sony Open

HONOLULU — Matt Every, finally making news for his golf, made the game look and sound easy Friday at the Sony Open

Every closed with three straight birdies for a 6-under 64, giving him a two-shot lead over Carl Pettersson (67) and David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., who kept the Canadian presence on the leaderboard with his second straight 66.

Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., the first-round leader at 63, had consecutive double bogeys at the start of his round and rallied for a 72, putting him five shots out of the lead along with Calgary’s Stephen Ames (68).  Brendon de Jonge shot 62 and Pat Perez was solid again with a 67 to finish three shots behind, along with Doug LaBelle, a Monday qualifier at the Sony Open for the third time.  Steve Stricker made double bogey from a bad lie in a bunker that stalled his momentum. He had to settle for a 69 and was five shots back in his bid to become the first player since Ernie Els in 2003 to sweep the Hawaii events.
