Teed Off Tee Times Lists the 12 Best Golf Courses in Cancun/Riviera Maya

Each day between now and the end of October, Tee’d Off Tee Times will list each of the Top 12 Golf Courses in the Cancun/Riviera Maya destination.

The criteria we use is not scientific and the difference between 12 and 1 is really not that much.  Personal preference, prestige in playing, designer, course design and layout, course conditioning and guest service were all taken into consideration.

Coming in at #4 is TPC Cancun. This Nick Price-designed South Course will be joined by a new clubhouse in late 2013 and the Tom Fazio-designed North course in Spring 2014.  It is the newest golf course in the destination and is only 5 minutes south of Cancun international airport and 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen.

The south course is situated on 1116 acres of diverse land offering extensive wildlife, beautiful native greenery, and an abundance of natural water.  Mr. Price incorporated these naturally occurring features into his design strategy.  The course boasts wall-to-wall Platinum Paspalum, as well as 79 bunkers and 5 lakes and is a unique golf experience and a challenge for all golfers.

The course is conveniently located less than 10 minutes south of Cancun Airport and features an “All Inclusive” system offering unlimited food and beverage at the Club House and along the course.

The criteria we use is not scientific and the difference between 12 and 1 is really not that much.  Personal preference, prestige in playing, designer, course design and layout, course conditioning and guest service were all taken into consideration.

We are at the halfway point in our countdown, so lets review golf courses 12 through 7.

Coming in at #12 Cozumel Country Club.  This Nicklaus Design Group course is one of the oldest in the area, opening in 2001, and is the first golf course in Mexico to earn the designation of Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary from Audubon International.

At #11 is El Manglar.  This 18-hole, par 54, 2923-yard course opened in early 2003 is great resort course with predominant trade winds that demand pinpoint accuracy and challenges even the most experienced of players.

#10 is Iberostar Cancun. Located in the heart of the Cancun hotel-zone, this 18-Hole, Par 72 Championship golf course is set within ancient Mayan Ruins and teeming with numerous tropical birds, native iguanas and huge crocodiles.

#9 on our list is Riviera Cancun.  Located at the south end of the hotel zone, this 18 hole, 7,060 yard, par 72 Jack Nicklaus Signature Design course is carved from the terrain’s natural contours and features two holes with gorgeous ocean views.

On our countdown at #8 is Playacar Golf Club.  Designed in 1995 by Robert Von Hagge, this par 72, 7,144 yard course is located in the heart of Playa del Carmen and is considered one of the most challenging in the region, especially the long, narrow front nine.

And at #7, is Playa Mujeres. Opening in July of 2006, this Greg Norman signature design is the region’s longest course at 7,218 yards offering spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea and located north of downtown Cancun, 20 minutes from the hotel zone.

Coming in at #7 is Playa Mujeres Golf Club. The second Greg Norman signature design in the destination is located north of downtown Cancun and 20 minutes from the hotel zone. Great news is that the highway between Cancun and Playa Mujeres is being expanded, which will cut down on travel time when completed.

This Greg Norman signature 18-hole course features ecologically friendly championship golf with carefully crafted water holes, jungles, bunkers and greens, utilizing a rearrangement of the site’s native plants, trees and other indigenous foliage.

Opening in July of 2006 and the longest course in the region measuring 7,218 yards, this course sits between the Caribbean Sea and Chachmochuc Lagoon and several holes offer spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea.

The criteria we use is not scientific and the difference between 12 and 1 is really not that much.  Personal preference, prestige in playing, designer, course design and layout, course conditioning and guest service were all taken into consideration.

Coming in at #11 is El Manglar Golf Course. This 18-hole course opened in early 2003 and was conceived with full respect for both, the naturally abundant fauna and the environmentally sensitive areas that surround it. A great resort course with predominant trade winds that demand pinpoint accuracy and challenges even the most experienced of players.

An 18-hole, par 54 course, this 2923-yard long filled with radiant white sand traps, the dark tones of natural stone lining pristine lakes, the deep, lush hue of the greens and the waste bunkers, this course is a garden of delights for golf lovers.

An imposing golf course with many surprising features, for example the 276 yard-long 13th hole played into the prevailing wind. The 17th, the course’s signature hole, nicknamed “Donna-green”, boasts two bunkers on either side of the green and one more at its center, making it a one-of-a-kind, and notoriously difficult to escape from with a par.  On the 195-yard 18th, players have only a one-shot chance to get to the green, which is built on an island-like mound with a trap at the entrance.

Take A Real Vacation And Try Golf In Cancun

It is somewhat ironic to think that every year, college students head to Cancun to enjoy Spring Break. Of course, a lot of the time they are engaged in so much frantic partying that they come back rather wiped out. This is not the way it has to be, though. In fact, there are a lot of activities such as Mexico golf that you can enjoy which are actually relaxing and low key. If you want to learn about how to have a chill time in Cancun, read on.

One of the things you want to do before you get here is read up a bit on what all there is to do in Cancun other than partying. The city is now showing itself off as a family destination, too, so you will find there are more calm activities that may refresh you. Spas are an excellent idea, but Cancun golf can be a leisurely way to spend the day, too. In addition to the obvious beach time you can enjoy, remember that as Cozumel blog recently pointed out (http://cozumelblog.com/blog/2011/04/07/international-travel-tips-for-a-cancun-vacation/), you can also enjoy gorgeous local parks that preserve the native ecology here. Watching nature is another great way to unwind.

You’ll want to keep the culture here in mind, as well. All fashion is not always appreciated on the golf course. While mexico golf courses tend to be laid back, you want to avoid loud and flashy attire that would be best suited to a club. Also, tipping is often appropriate in this part of the world as an All About Cancun post (http://allaboutcancun.com/about-cancun/travel-tips/) explains. You do not always have to tip your cab driver, but room service and other service people do expect a little something even if it is not cash. Asking your hotel desk person can often reveal this kind of information for you.

Of course, the golf resorts here in Cancun do stand out as wonderful ways to relax. You can recover a bit from any partying you might do and if you do not feel like having to hang out with a large group as you should do during the night time in the city, then it is a good idea to head out on the green and get in some of that gorgeous Yucatan sunshine. This gives you some physical activity while still being a calm way to relax, too.

If you do plan to enjoy Cancun area golf activities like playa golf courses just down the road, you may want to set things up in advance. The resort you are staying at could well have a tournament planned and if so you would be better off knowing in advance. A little planning goes a long way down here.
