PGA Player Rickie Fowler Putting Tips

Everyone knows when you’re the slow player in your group. Even guys on tour get called out for it – Rickie Fowler’s been known to poke some fun at Jordan Spieth for taking too long. A lot of average golfers end up burning time on the green, looking at putts from all angles, grinding over three-footers. One thing everyone needs to understand is that spending a long time over a putt doesn’t make you more likely to make the putt. In fact, you can do more damage than good by looking at it for too long.

Fowler has a few tips on how to putt quickly, but also well.

1. Spend your time wisely.
You should never be surprised when it’s your turn on the green. Instead of waiting until then to start reading your putt, begin looking at your line while the other guys in your group are putting. That way when it’s your turn, you’re ready to roll. “After I replace my ball,” Rickie says, “I take about five seconds to confirm my read.”

2. Don’t waste time second-guessing yourself.
Rickie thinks that a lot of last-minute second-guessing has to do with speed. If you know what your normal speed is before you’re standing over the putt, you’ll never question it. “I play all putts as if the ball were going to roll two feet past,” Rickie says. “Find a speed you like and stick with it.”

3. Stay confident over the ball.
Putts look different when you’re standing over them than when you’re reading them from behind the ball. But don’t let it freak you out. “I make a practice stroke or two with my eyes focused on exactly where the ball is going to enter the cup,” Rickie says. “For example, a straight putt goes in at 6 o’clock, but a sharp left-to-right breaker might go in at 9 o’clock. I then work backward to match up the speed and line. This helps me settle once more on my read, quickly and with confidence.”

golf new 1Choke Down On The Grip

This seems like an obvious mechanic, but choking down on the grip actually does a lot more than simply get your body closer to the ball to make a delicate stroke. Choking down also counterbalances the club, meaning added weight above the hands work to make it easier to make less than full shots without flipping the hands over too soon.  Remember as you choke down: Don’t hunch your upper body.  Choke down with your hands, and get your body lower by adding more flex in the knees, as opposed to hunching over.chipping

PGA Tour’s New Schedule Helps Mayakoba Golf Classic

The PGA Tour officially announced their 2013 schedule earlier this week.  We know from the release, the Mayakoba Golf Classic will be moving from its February date (opposite the World Golf Championship Match Play event) to its own date in November as part of the beginning to the 2013-2014 PGA Tour FedEx Cup season.

What has always been viewed as a drawback by fans and sponsors of the Mayakoba Golf Classic is the lack of “big names” at the event.  Any golfer in the Top 64 in the world who wanted to play at Mayakoba was forced to instead play the Match Play due to PGA Tour rules.  That meant top players like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy could not even consider adding the MGC to their schedules.

But now, there is a chance the top players in the world will come to Mayakoba.  How big of a chance, it remains to be seen.  The MGC will now have its own date on the PGA Tour schedule, allowing any PGA Tour member the ability to play Mayakoba.  However, with the increase in fall events in Asia & the Far East and the Race to Dubai ending in late November, the Mayakoba Golf Classic may continue to miss the most recognizable internatonal names in golf at its event.  The good news is more well known North and South American golfers should make the trip in an attempt to capture 500 FedEx Cup points and the possible Masters berth.

PGA Tour’s New Schedule Helps Mayakoba Golf Classic

The PGA Tour officially announced their 2013 schedule earlier this week.  Suprisingly, one of the most popular events with competitors and their families, the Mayakoba Golf Classic, was not on the 2013 schedule.  Does this mean that El Camaleon no longer hosts the Only PGA Tour Event in Mexico?  Fortunately for all of us golf fans, it is just a quirk in the new schedule.

Over the next few days, Tee’d Off Tee Times will look at the new 2013 schedule and give you a sneak peek at the totally revised 2013-2014 FedEx Cup schedule (not to be confused with the abbreviated 2013 schedule) and we’ll tell you when the next Mayakoba Golf Classic will be held.

After the 2013 Season, which ends in with the Tour Championship Sept 22nd, the 2013-2014 PGA TOUR Season will officially begin three weeks later with the first Fall Tournament.  While the exact dates have not been set (at least publically), the Mayakoba Golf Classic will become part of the start to the new season, somewhere in mid-November 2013.

The PGA Tour also announced that the Fall Tournaments will award full FedExCup points.  This means 500 points to the winner of the Mayakoba Golf Classic, a two-year exemption and a possible Masters invite.

In our next story, we will look at who may be playing in the next Mayakoba Golf Classic.  Is there a chance the biggest names in golf, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy or Phil Mickelson, may play?  We’ll let you know.
