What a great field for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open! Teed Off Tee Times can’t wait to see the best players in the world tackle an expected bomber-friendly Torrey Pines South Course that measures almost 7,600 yards.
Tiger, Phil, Bubba, Rickie, Keegan, Brandt, Dustin and Hunter (you know golf is popular when only your first name is needed) will all be in the field along with other big hitters Nick Watney, Jason Kokrak, Kyle Stanley, Robert Garrigus and Gary Woodland.
Canadians will also be well represented this week with Brad Fritsch, Graham DeLaet, Adam Hadwin and David Heard all in the field. And, Stephen Ames and Mike Weir are even paired together for the first two days with Justin Leonard. It promises to be a fantastic four days of golf in southern California. PGA Tour Announces New 2013-2014 Schedule
Earlier this week the PGA Tour announced the first six events of their new 2013-2014 wrap around schedule. These first six events will take place in October and November 2013. The final event will be the newly re-named OHL Classic at Mayakoba, November 14-17, 2013. Previously known as the Mayakoba Golf Classic, this event is held at El Camaleon Golf Club at Mayakoba and is the result of OHL’s continuing committment to both Mayakoba and the PGA Tour.
The OHL Classic at Mayakoba now boasts its own unencumbered date on the PGA TOUR calendar affording any PGA TOUR player, regardless of world ranking, the opportunity to compete in Mexico’s Only PGA TOUR Event should he meet qualifying criteria and wish to play. Previously the tournament had been held in February opposite the World Golf Championships—Accenture Match Play Championship, prohibiting the top 64 players in the world from enjoying the chance to compete at Mayakoba.
“We are honored to continue as host of Mexico’s Only PGA TOUR Event and extremely pleased to now have our own week on the TOUR schedule,” said Andres Pan de Soraluce, CEO of OHL Developments, owner and developer of the Mayakoba Resort. “In many ways a new era has been born for this tournament and we are excited about our new date and look forward to a bright future. We are confident the 2013 tournament will be a signature event for Mexico and for golf worldwide. As always, we are eager to share the beautiful Mayakoba resort as well as the Riviera Maya and Cancún regions with the best golfers in the world and an international television audience.”
As part of the announcement, officials also unveiled an increase in the total purse to $6 million USD guaranteeing the winner will earn a check of more than $1 million USD. The OHL Classic at Mayakoba will continue to offer the largest amount of prize money of any golf tournament in Latin America, a distinction it has held since its inception in 2007.
With this new date, the tournament will continue to be a part of the season-long FedExCup competition and will now distribute a full allocation of FedExCup points. In addition to a winner’s check of $1.08 million USD, the champion will also earn 500 FedExCup points. Previously, the event awarded 250 points to the first-place finisher.
We here at Teed Off Tee Times, based in the beautiful Riviera Maya and Cancun destination, count El Camaleon Mayakoba as our favourite golf course because of it’s year-round PGA Tour conditioning and it is the only golf course in the destination to have two golf holes along the Mexican Caribbean.

PGA Tour’s New Schedule Helps Mayakoba Golf Classic
The PGA Tour officially announced their 2013 schedule earlier this week. We know from the release, the Mayakoba Golf Classic will be moving from its February date (opposite the World Golf Championship Match Play event) to its own date in November as part of the beginning to the 2013-2014 PGA Tour FedEx Cup season.
What has always been viewed as a drawback by fans and sponsors of the Mayakoba Golf Classic is the lack of “big names” at the event. Any golfer in the Top 64 in the world who wanted to play at Mayakoba was forced to instead play the Match Play due to PGA Tour rules. That meant top players like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy could not even consider adding the MGC to their schedules.
But now, there is a chance the top players in the world will come to Mayakoba. How big of a chance, it remains to be seen. The MGC will now have its own date on the PGA Tour schedule, allowing any PGA Tour member the ability to play Mayakoba. However, with the increase in fall events in Asia & the Far East and the Race to Dubai ending in late November, the Mayakoba Golf Classic may continue to miss the most recognizable internatonal names in golf at its event. The good news is more well known North and South American golfers should make the trip in an attempt to capture 500 FedEx Cup points and the possible Masters berth.

PGA Tour’s New Schedule Helps Mayakoba Golf Classic
The PGA Tour officially announced their 2013 schedule earlier this week. Suprisingly, one of the most popular events with competitors and their families, the Mayakoba Golf Classic, was not on the 2013 schedule. Does this mean that El Camaleon no longer hosts the Only PGA Tour Event in Mexico? Fortunately for all of us golf fans, it is just a quirk in the new schedule.
Over the next few days, Tee’d Off Tee Times will look at the new 2013 schedule and give you a sneak peek at the totally revised 2013-2014 FedEx Cup schedule (not to be confused with the abbreviated 2013 schedule) and we’ll tell you when the next Mayakoba Golf Classic will be held.
After the 2013 Season, which ends in with the Tour Championship Sept 22nd, the 2013-2014 PGA TOUR Season will officially begin three weeks later with the first Fall Tournament. While the exact dates have not been set (at least publically), the Mayakoba Golf Classic will become part of the start to the new season, somewhere in mid-November 2013.
The PGA Tour also announced that the Fall Tournaments will award full FedExCup points. This means 500 points to the winner of the Mayakoba Golf Classic, a two-year exemption and a possible Masters invite.
In our next story, we will look at who may be playing in the next Mayakoba Golf Classic. Is there a chance the biggest names in golf, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy or Phil Mickelson, may play? We’ll let you know.

And now, coming in at #1 on our list of the 12 best courses is El Camaleon Mayakoba. Host to the PGA Tour Mayakoba Golf Classic and located within the tourist destination of Mayakoba, this 7,044 yard layout is the first Greg Norman designed course to open in Mexico and boasts 3 separate environmental changes (jungle, mangrove and ocean front) and two holes along the Mexican Caribbean.
The 7th and 15th holes play right to the edge of the Caribbean Sea with the sand and the spray punctuating the breeze. The course is a part of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. Also on property is the first and only Jim McLean Golf School in Mexico.

Coming in at #2 is Riviera Maya Golf Club. A 27 hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. design features an 18 hole championship layout and a 9 hole executive course. The course is laid out in a unique natural environment surrounded by more than 290 hectares of dense tropical forest. It is the furthest south, 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen but only 10 minutes north of Tulum.
The course is an impressive work of architecture with a spectacular synergy between golf and the lush Mayan jungle, integrating natural lakes and cenotes (sink holes) within the rugged terrain of an ancient limestone quarry. The Par 5-14th (shown) and the Par 3-15th are two of the most picturesque holes in the destination.
